GGCS Issues the UK’s First Guarantees of Origin for Hydrogen
In early October, National Gas and Centrica blended green hydrogen into the UK’s National Transmission System (NTS) for the first time.
For each kWh injected, GGCS issued a Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RGGO). They were transferred to Centrica, who allocated them to Brigg Power Station, just downstream of the injection point.
GGCS understands that these are the first-ever RGGOs issued for hydrogen in the UK.
Guarantees of Origin can play a key role in blending public and private support and encouraging additional renewable energy production, with the biomethane RGGO market estimated to have delivered £120 million of value to producers since 2013.
As the hydrogen market develops, RGGOs can bring additional value and support any demand-side measures that require tracking of hydrogen to particular end-users.
The UK government is in the process of establishing a hydrogen certification scheme. In the lead-up to that scheme going live, GGCS has developed a proof of concept for the UK hydrogen RGGO market and is ready to cover any use cases that the government scheme may not.
