The Department for Transport’s first Freight Carbon Review has reinforced the need to find alternatives to diesel and noted that biomethane has “significant potential to decarbonise the road freight sector in the short to medium term”.
The report recognises the “considerable interest” from the transport industry and adds momentum to the push for biomethane to play a more prominent role in supporting UK air quality and emission targets.
The government are currently consulting on creating a development fuel sub-target within the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation and the REA have responded supporting the inclusion of biomethane in this category. Meanwhile the market continues to develop with the first CNG fuelling station connected to the high pressure gas grid now in operation, supporting Waitrose's fleet of biomethane powered Scania trucks, and increasing interest in biomethane powered buses.
