2025 Annual Report Released

Posted: 11 May, 2026. Written by Boris Eremin

We are pleased to publish our annual report covering the activity of the Scheme in 2025 (available here).

Landmarks and achievements during the year include:

  • 4.2 TWh of RGGOs retired/cancelled, compared to 3.4 TWh in 2024.
  • Growth in biomethane-to-grid plants to a total of 130, while trader accounts fell to 108 (partly due to the integration of trader functions into producer accounts during the transition to the G-REX database in 2024).
  • Closely monitoring the latest research released by Government on the extent of biomethane leakage from anaerobic digestion plants during the production of biogas and biomethane, particularly the Methane Emissions from Anaerobic Digestion (MEAD) study published in January 2025.
  • Welcoming Government's extension of the commissioning deadline for new biomethane plant developers to take part in the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) to 31 March 2030.
  • Contributing to the GHG Protocol's treatment of biomethane RGGOs within its revision of its Corporate Standards and being a signatory of the “Let Green Gas Count” campaign’s joint letter published in February 2025.
  • Continuing contributions to discussions with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on harmonising the treatment of RGGOs in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) to that under the EU ETS.
  • Maintaining engagement with gas distribution network operators (GDNOs) in relation to their support for biomethane within their business plan submissions to Ofgem.
  • Engaging with the Green Gas Taskforce (GGT) and welcoming the recognition of the value RGGOs bring to UK biomethane producers in their Reducing the cost of Net Zero with biomethane study published at Green Gas Day in October 2025.
  • Continuing to support the REA on a range of policy issues around biogas, biomethane, and green hydrogen.
