2024 Annual Report Released

We are pleased to publish our annual report covering the activity of the Scheme in 2024 (available here).

Landmarks and achievements during the year include:

  • 3.4 TWh of RGGOs retired/cancelled.
  • Growth in biomethane to grid plants to a total of 114, while trader accounts grew to 118.
  • Contributing to the GHG Protocol's treatment of biomethane RGGOs within its revision of its Corporate Standards;
  • Welcoming Government's consideration green gas certificates in its February 2024 Call for Evidence for a Future Policy Framework for Biomethane;
  • Corresponding with DESNZ and other industry partners to help ensure that there is accurate reporting Government within national energy statistics on biomethane production volumes;
  • Conducting ongoing discussions with Government on harmonising treatment of RGGOs in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS);
  • Reviewing the latest research released by Government on the extent of biomethane leakage from anaerobic digestion plants during the production of biogas and biomethane;
  • Maintaining engagement with gas distribution network operators (GDNOs) in relation to their support for biomethane within their business plan submissions to Ofgem;
  • Continuing to support the REA on a range of policy issues around biogas, biomethane, and green hydrogen.
